It was energetic, solid and performed short to long turns with confidence and stability. Ice grip is tenatious. I tested the ski Winter 2006 at Wachusett Mtn in Massachusetts. Typical East Coast skiing conditions, "machine groomed packed powder" where they had just groomed that afternoon and East Coast ice/hardpack everywhere else. I’m a fairly light (6ft, 150lb) ex-college racer who hasn’t bought a pair of new skis in 10yrs. So I was looking for skis that could carve on anything, give me a nice spring out of a turn and then dive into the next when I pressured the tips. The RX9 didn’t disappoint. These skis did everything I asked with poise and confidence. I never felt out of control, even for a second, skiing everything from tight fall-line turns on newly groomed snow to carving medium radius turns on the beloved east coast hardpack to ripping some long turns just to see if they had an upper speed limit. I could make any size turn at will on softer sugar/groomed snow. Real thrill on freshly groomed trail, easy turn initiation, solid mid-turn and good pop at the end. Lots of energy in = lots of energy out. It had great grip on hard snow. It took concentration and some effort to make short turns on ice (really any short turn on ice is a plus), but ice grip was better than expected and I could makes turns reliably. The factory description says "less sidecut" and, because I was using a straighter ski, this fit me perfectly. I tried skis with more sidecut but I found them to be more difficult to control. Some skis (Volkl 5-star) seemed to want to make only short turns and anything else required effort. Others didn’t have the energy (Fischer RX8 and Atomic Izor 9:7) and anything with more than 70mm waist (K2 Recon) didn’t have the hardpack grip. Overall, this ski is just lots of fun that I feel confident going anywhere."
